3_ions.jpg
Three-ion image taken by a CCD camera and as used fort the teleportation
experiment. The
distance between these ions is about 8 micrometers, in the actual
teleportation experiment, the
distance was reduced to about 5 micrometers between neighbouring ions.

Picture of the actual ion trap used for the teleportation experiment, the
picture was taken
through one of the window ports used for optical access to the ions.

Sketch of the linear ion trap setup used for the teleportation experiment. The
ion trap consists
of electrodes made out of four knife edges and two tips (endcaps). With the
help of
radiofrequency and DC electromagnetic fields ions can be confined to the
center of the trap
and align along the trap axis.

This picture shows the two students operating the quantum computer experiment
which is
steered by means of classical computers programming lasers and radiofrequency
sources.

this image was used
for the cover page of the upcoming Nature issue.
Teleportation_sketch.jpg
Sketch of the experimental teleportation procedure: after entangling ion 2 and
3 (the center
ion and the orange one to the left), a special (Bell) measurement of the first
two ions (using
the two red-colored ions, the blue laser beams and the copper-colored
cylindrical detectors) is
taken and classically communicated to a laser (copper-colored square box)
which sends some
laser pulses (yellow beam) to ion number 3 (orange). Thus, the initially
available quantum
state Psi on ion 1 (red rightmost ion) is teleported to the leftmost ion 3
(orange).
